A Weighty Issue

Does this sound familiar? You wake up in the morning, get out of bed, start your morning routine and rituals and then you do it… you step on the scale. In that one instant, how you feel about yourself and your day has just been determined by the number on a scale.

It is amazing how powerful a scale is, or rather, how much of our power we give away to a scale.

If you like the number on the scale, you feel happy, confident, excited, empowered, proud of yourself, and that life is good. If you do not like the number on the scale, you feel disappointed, discouraged, upset, mad, like a failure, and you begin down the path of giving up or a path of restriction and punishment.

Before you even go down for breakfast, that inanimate object determines how you feel and how you are going to get through your day. The number on the scale now impacts your choices for what you wear, what you eat, how you exercise, how you see yourself, how you respond to others and the energy and vibe you put out to the world. Isn’t it crazy that a single number holds so much power and influence?

The truth is, body weight fluctuates throughout the day, it changes with the seasons, it goes up and down for women throughout their menstrual cycle, it changes with age, it changes with different kinds of exercise and of course it changes depending on what you eat and how much you eat and drink. A basic scale does not take into account how much water weight, body fat or muscle mass you are carrying or all the other variables that influence that number. So why do we give it so much power?

If you are somebody that weighs in, I strongly recommend that you get rid of your scale. Throw it away and free yourself from the emotional rollercoaster. You know how your body is doing so you really don’t need a scale to dictate that for you. What if you are feeling really good, you have been eating well and exercising and your outlook on life is improving and then you get on the scale and it tells you a number you don’t like. All of that good has just been deleted.

Is the scale really that important? Why do we care so much about a number? Why do we put so much weight into what we weigh? A scale shouldn’t determine how we feel about ourselves. It doesn’t define who we are. Why should it be the thing that influences our day? Do you really want it to be the first thing you see when you wake or the last thing you see before you go to bed? Should that number really be the judge in deciding how you feel about yourself and body?

I say, it’s time to step off and step in to you. Liberate yourself from the scale. Instead of getting on the scale, go to the mirror and look into your eyes and see you. Say something powerful to yourself, see the things you love about yourself and let that be the determining factor for how you walk through your day and your life. If you can make one healthy change in your life today, make it be that. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter you will feel!
